Orgasms follow Asia's bedtime

The count climbs every afternoon in UTC, when night falls over China and India, home to close to 40% of the world's people. It bottoms out around 09:00 UTC, mid morning in Europe and the small hours in the Americas. Solo orgasms stay fairly flat around the clock; the swing comes from couples.

How we know

Nobody counts orgasms as they happen, so this is a model, not a feed. It multiplies how many orgasms begin each second by how long one lasts, the same way you could tell how many people are in a shop from how fast they walk in and how long they stay.

How many begin comes from how often adults have sex (about 255 million encounters a day worldwide) and masturbate, and how often each ends in an orgasm. How long they last comes from lab measurements.

How long an orgasm lasts
about 20 seconds for women, 12 for men
Chance of an orgasm with a partner
about 90% for men, 60% for women
Masturbation
about 35 times a year for men, 8 for women
Sex
about 30 times a year per adult, 15 minutes each

Every one of those numbers is uncertain, so the true figure could be anywhere from about 30,000 to 390,000 people at once. The full method, the hour by hour model and every source are in How many people are having sex right now? We did the math.

Quick answers

How many orgasms happen every second?

About 8,600 on an average day: roughly 4,600 with a partner and 4,000 alone. That adds up to around 740 million a day.

How many people are having an orgasm at the same time?

Around 124,000 at a typical moment across the week, and about 135,000 on an average Saturday. It runs from roughly 95,000 at the quietest hour to 190,000 at the busiest.

How long does an orgasm last?

In lab studies, about 20 seconds for women on average, with some lasting more than half a minute, and around 12 seconds for men.

Do men or women have more orgasms?

Men, by count. About 90% of men usually orgasm with a partner against about 60% of women, and men masturbate more often. But women’s orgasms last longer, so with a partner more women than men are mid orgasm at any given second.
